For me, music is more than just art. Music is more of a force, able to stir one's emotions, awaken one's senses, and unite people under a common denominator. It is an essential part to my life.
Over the past couple of the weeks I've begun to realize that New York City's disco-infused group THAT WORK is one of the metro's best kept secrets. Having only released three songs without an EP or album to their name, the band appears to be hidden with only 228 followers on SoundCloud and 390 likes of Facebook. I am sure those numbers are going to skyrocket in the upcoming months, for these guys are just too good for them not to. Their most recent song, "Act Like You Know", carries a synthy flare much in the same light as Holy Ghost! When stripped to the bone, THAT WORK's material is indebted to older disco influences yet also finds ways to incorporate sounds that are much more relatable to the modern era. "Act Like You Know" continues this pattern, coming across as an edgy, cutting jam that leaves the perfect amount of room for a dancing option. The Dallas native Booty Thrill first started off his music study with guitar as his main instrument, but you wouldn't be able to tell from his newest release Thrillwave. Instead of focusing on guitars, Thrillwave is actually a dream come true for disco and funk aficionados; synthesizers and heavy bass lines are the main arteries that keep it alive. There is even something here hip-hop heads, for this is the first time that Booty Thrill includes rappers with his mixes. When all is said and done, the combination of music genres creates a colorful palette. You can expect electronic, jazz, soul, and even R&B. Yesterday I received a notification on Facebook from an artist I 'like' named Chris Malinchak, a New York City musician who produces beats from the lucky label French Express. Thanks to the ol' Crackbook, I was informed of a new song he released that was accompanied by a caption which simply read: "Dreams that keep me up at night". Lo and behold, the track was entitled "These Dreams", a work that fits superbly with his steady flow of output over the past couple of months. The beat loops over its 6-minute duration are fresh and energetic, exposing us to his infectious rhythm and ensuring that we won't be bored. Despite the lyrics that repeat "no excuses, no excuses, no excuses, you know what you've done", the overall tone actually functions quite sprightly and fits the bill for those casual summer cruises. I was granted a healthy dose of excitement today when I learned of the fact that there was a new Work Drugs single that came out recently. The track, entitled "Pluto", is follow up to the previous single "License to Drive", and will be featured on their new, upcoming album Absolute Bearing due out on Bobby Cahn Records on July 10th. "Pluto" continues pushing forward the dreamy, laid-back summer vibe that Work Drugs has done so well in establishing. In this they've even included a rousing saxophone to close it out...smooth and satisfying. According to their page it's about someone who they once loved, but now don't even recognize. If the intent of an EP is to grab your attention, then Ghost Vibrations is a prime model to follow after. Located in Portland, Foreign Orange has made a well-crafted collection of energy-infused rock jams that range from disco to electronica to funk. We even get a taste of 1960s classic soul with the closer "Losin' You Again". All in all the release is incredibly playful, an exploration of how many sounds can be borrowed from a spectrum of genres to make something undeniably catchy and striking. From the moment the bass-fueled groove lands on opener "Day By Day Livin", it's difficult not let the whole thing play through. So Foreign Orange, wherever you may be out there...attention grabbed. You can expect a full release coming out this spring, but for now he has graciously given us the Ghost Vibrations EP for free over at his Bandcamp, so be sure to hit that up before he changes his mind.
